ספר ה"אורית"

יהודי אתיופיה דבקו באמונת ישראל וקיימו אורח חיים יהודי. בשנים הרבות של ניתוקם מהעם היהודי התגבשה בקרבם מורשת ייחודית.

הספר שלפנינו, ספר ה"אורית", מתעד את המסורת הדתית ואת כתבי הקודש של יהודי אתיופיה. עיקרו עוסק בספר ה"אורית", הוא ספר התורה שתורגם לשפת הגעז העתיקה. ספר ה"אורית" היה מורה הדרך שעיצב את מורשת יהודי אתיופיה.

הספר הנו פרי מחקר ראשוני, מקיף ומעמיק, אודות ספר ה"אורית". מובאים ממצאים רבים וחדשים המהווים מפתח להבנת דרכם הייחודית של יהודי אתיופיה בדרך קיומן של מצוות רבות. לדוגמא: מדוע יהודי אתיופיה אינם תוקעים בשופר בראש השנה, מפני מה הם אוסרים לשחוט בעל חיים כשהוא עדיין צעיר, מהי הסיבה שיש איסור חמור לקיים יחסי אישות בשבת, מה גרם לכך שאין במורשתם את מצוות התפילין והמזוזה ומהו ההסבר שאין ציצית בבגדיהם כדרך הנהוגה במורשת ישראל.

הספר הנו ספר יסוד בתחום מורשת יהודי אתיופיה ומאיר לראשונה את התורה שעיצבה את דרכם הייחודית.

על המחברים

הרב מנחם ולדמן הוא מהפעילים המרכזיים בהעלאתם ובקליטתם של יהודי אתיופיה ונחשב אחד המומחים הגדולים בחקר יהדות אתיופיה. הוא מנהל את תכניות היהדות לעולי אתיופיה במסגרת הסוכנות היהודית, ומשמש למעלה משלושים שנה רב הקהילות הממתינות לעלייה באתיופיה. הרב ולדמן חיבר ספרים רבים ועשרות מאמרים בתחומי המורשת וההיסטוריה של יהודי אתיופיה.

פניאל גתאצ'וו הוא חוקר ופילולוג הבקי בלשונות אתיופיה ובפרט בשפת הגעז העתיקה המשמשת עד היום כשפת הקודש של התפילות והכתבים הדתיים באתיופיה. הוא מנוסה בפענוח ותרגום כתבי-יד, בעל ידע רב במורשת יהודי אתיופיה ובמורשת המקראית באתיופיה.

Abstract

The book written  Rabbi Menachem Waldman and Peniel Getachew, is an exceptional work that employs a unique approach to scrutinizing various Ethiopic manuscripts, resulting in significant findings.

The book is divided into three main sections, along with important appendices that cover several topics. The first section, “Ethiopian Jews’ Heritage,” explores the beliefs, customs, and observance of commandments among Ethiopian Jews. The second section, “Ethiopian Jews’ Holy Scriptures,” examines nearly all of their scriptures, presenting excerpts from each and including relevant images. The third section, “The Book of Orit: The Torah That Shapes Ethiopian Jewry Heritage,” offers an in-depth discussion of significant commandments, comparing the Ethiopic text with the Hebrew text to provide a groundbreaking perspective on Ethiopian Jewish heritage.

The book includes two appendices. The first, “Names of God in the Book of Orit and in Ethiopian Jews’ Heritage,” highlights variations in the names of God found in the Ethiopic translation of the Five Books of Moses and explores the historical background of Hebraic names in Ethiopic prayer books. The second, “The Only Manuscript of Orit in the World: Its Source Is from the Hebrew Version of the Torah,” draws special attention to an exceptional manuscript, offering examples that bring glad tidings to the Ethiopian Jewish community and others interested in Ethiopic-Hebraic culture.

The Orit and the biblical canon in Ethiopia emerged through Greek translations of the Hebrew Bible. It includes not only the Five Books of Moses, but also Joshua, Judges, Ruth, and, at times, Second Temple–era works such as Jubilees and Enoch, both considered canonical in the Ethiopian tradition.
